Book: Poke the box

Author: Seth Godin

Genre: Entrepreneurship / Self help

Do you know Colonel Sanders?

The founder of KFC, one of the largest restaurant chains in the world.

When I first read about his failed attempts in numerous businesses, I asked people only one question– How this man never felt tired to ‘start’ his initiatives again and again?

Poke the box, written by Seth Godin, is all about this monumental act- Starting stuff !

I called ‘starting’ as monumental since most of us don’t dare to start any initiatives. We always lock ourselves in safe zone, fearing the risk involved in ‘starting’ new things. Our society has trained us in this manner.

In this book, Seth Godin challenges us to break out from this status quo, to poke the box and see what happens !

The main goals of this book are three:

* Developing the act of initiating.

* Shipping out productive ideas to the market.

* Preparing ourselves to face the failures while initiating.

“Imagine that the world had no middlemen, no bosses, no one telling what you couldn’t do. If you lived in that world, what would you do?

Seth Godin

Don’t expect that this book gives you clear roadmap to entrepreneurship. In this, Godin just reminds us the importance of initiating and shipping our ideas to make difference. Whether it could be a business, a technology, a new revolution, an art or a practice, there will be no innovation unless we start stuff boldly. Godin took nice anecdotes and entrepreneur examples to seed this point in our minds.

“Please stop waiting for a map. We reward those who draw maps, not those who follow them

Seth Godin

Often we are afraid of initiating because of the high risk or chances of failure involved in it. Risk, as everybody perceives, isn’t a bad thing at all. Every failed attempt has a learning opportunity attached to it. Take a look at some famous personalities: Oprah Winfrey, Michael Bloomberg, George Orwell, J.K. Rowling etc. All were failures at some point in their lives. Yet, they started over and over until they established themselves in the market. If they could do it, what’s making us to step back?

When I started this blog, I feared whether people would read it or not. Even though I have only a few followers now, I constantly build up motivation to write and create art. All this wouldn’t happen If I didn’t ‘start’, right? Who knows what lies in our creative brains, until we poke and see the results !

“The cost of being wrong is less than the cost of doing nothing

Seth Godin

You might be wondering what exactly you need to start? It could be anything that gives you an opportunity to grow. If you love eating all the day, then start mastering your kitchen to bring out that secret chef in you ! If you have good hand in entertainment, arts and media, then play with your creativity in those fields ! What’s more important here is to start even though you fail. If you develop this habit of starting stuff, shipping your ideas, building the business and making difference, then the world will enjoy the fruits of your bravery.

Start now ! Go !!
